Partnership For Land Use Science Program
PROJECT OBJECTIVE
The program aims to reduce emissions from deforestation and forest degradation and enhance sequestration through afforestation, conservation, and sustainable management of forests.
PROJECT APPROACH
The program will feed into the GOI’s NAPCC and Green India Mission. IORA as an implementing partner will contribute to the project objectives through following activities:
- Design and develop REDD+ projects at districts and state levels
- Develop tools, techniques and methods (TTMs) for ecosystem management and conservation
- Develop planning and decision support system
- Build human and institutional capacity
- Develop community based forest inventory system
- Actively engage the state forest departments and local community in the development and deployment of the TTMs
- Design, develop and deploy Public Private Partnership models for forestry conservation in India
- Create an enabling environment for REDD+ implementation in India
PROJECT CONTRIBUTION TO ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY AND ECONOMIC GROWTH
- Enhanced carbon stock and carbon sequestration potential
- Restore ecological health, forest density and biodiversity
- Success models for other landscapes to follow
- Transparent, accountable, and sustainable forest carbon monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) process
- Improvement in data management system
- Support to the National Forest Carbon MRV system for India
- Design advanced algorithms for remote sensing analysis for forest management
- Knowledge development on climate change and REDD+
- Increased capacity and number of trained people on sustainable land & forest management and monitoring & reporting practices
- Improved community participation in forest management and conservation
- Protection of indigenous communities and their traditions
- Promote alternative fuelwood saving technology for household cooking, processing agricultural products and industrial usage to reduce dependence on fuelwood from forests
- Increased socio-economic status of forest dependent communities
- Public private partnerships strategies to support forest conservation and enhancement
The activities will help create in India an environment that encourages REDD+ to be adopted widely and thus allow India to make a significant contribution to countering the threats posed by global climate change
