Research Associate – Forestry & Biodiversity

Job Title: Research Associate – Forestry & Biodiversity 

Job Location: New Delhi

About the Job:

IORA is looking to hire a self-motivated, enterprising and hardworking individual with a passion for forestry and conservation for the post of Research Associate. The role involves assisting in the development and execution of forest conservation projects. This includes eco-restoration, ecological assessments, biodiversity assessment, designing conservation plans and financial incentive strategies. The job is a good mix of office-based and outdoor work with existing opportunities to work in some of the most diverse forest and biodiversity areas in the country.

 

Responsibilities:

  1. Work towards forest restoration assessment and planning
  2. Conduct forest biomass, biodiversity and ecological assessments
  3. Plan and implement project research processes and methodologies
  4. Collate and analyse data as required
  5. Measure carbon content across different landscapes and forests
  6. Calculate biodiversity indices, population abundances etc.
  7. Contribute to report writing, development of proposals and other project collaterals
  8. Represent IORA at multi-stakeholder consultations

 

Desired Qualifications, Skills, Experience and Competencies:

  1. Master’s degree in Forestry/Biodiversity or related fields with 2 years of relevant work experience
  2. Knowledge of forestry operations and existing practices, biodiversity assessment methods, data analysis
  3. Basic experience in forestry modelling, forest management planning and participatory forest management
  4. Experience working in the field/ provinces
  5. Excellent communication skills and exceptional attention to details
  6. Strong problem-solving skills
  7. Ability to work in challenging circumstances

Research Associate – RS&GIS

Job Title: Research Associate – RS&GIS

Job Location: New Delhi

About the Job:

We are looking to hire a self-motivated, and hardworking individual with a good background in the domain of Remote Sensing and GIS applications, with special emphasis on Programming and Machine Learning. Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to image processing, collection of ground-truth data, geo-statistical analysis, spatial data generation and mining, and generation of cartographic outputs as per the project requirements. The job is a good mix of office-based and occasional field work involving multi-stakeholder engagements.

 

Responsibilities: 

  1. Satellite data acquisition
  2. Image Processing and analysis

  4. Spatial analysis
  5. Map making and report generation

 

Desired Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 

  1. Master’s Degree in Geoinformatics / Remote Sensing / Geography / Environmental Science / Forestry / Agriculture / Earth Sciences
  2. Experience in programming and machine learning skills (Python, R, Google Earth Engine etc.)
  3. Knowledge of conventional methods of image processing (in ERDAS/ENVI)
  4. Hands-on experience in open-source or proprietary GIS software (ArcGIS/QGIS etc).
  5. Experience of working in Forestry, Climate Change, Natural Resource Management and/or related sectors in particular will be helpful.
  6. Experience in the usage of Neural Network based methods for image analysis will be an added advantage.
  7. Good analytical ability; should be able to think outside the box

Social Expert

Job Title: Social Expert

About the Job:

IORA is looking to hire a self-motivated, enterprising and hardworking individual with a passion for environmental conservation to lead, support and guide multi-disciplinary projects spanning forestry, climate change and agriculture verticals. The role involves development, deployment and dissemination of socio-economic, gender and inclusionary policies across programmes. It also entails assisting project teams in designing community interventions, aid in monitoring, reporting and verification work as well as research.

 

Responsibilities: Operational Support – 

  1. Participate in the identification, appraisal, design and implementation of projects and programs in Forestry, Climate Change and Agriculture verticals
  2. Screening for potential projects and developing project proposals
  3. Supporting work on Forestry and climate change related risks and impacts and supporting and managing preparation and implementation of projects.
  4. Supporting due diligence assessment of projects and services and undertaking field visits if needed.
  5. Guiding on preparation and implementation of environmental and social impact assessments (ESIAs) and environmental management plans across priority sectors such as forestry, water, urban, energy and agriculture as per the requirements of the organisation.
  6. Report writing and development of dissemination and communication material
  7. Supporting projects for stakeholder consultations and related socio-economic studies.
  8. Undertake Gender Assessments and socio-economic studies related to project work
  9. Contribute to Iora’s knowledge base on environmental and social aspects, particularly related to climate change, biodiversity and ecosystem services, and emerging ESG frameworks.

 

Responsibilities: Essential –

  1. Knowledge of country’s relevant environmental laws and regulations and corporate environmental management systems
  2. Proven work record on Knowledge Management and Capacity Building
  3. Proven ability to carry out complex tasks as part of multi-disciplinary teams
  4. Capacity to work under pressure to meet strict deadlines
  5. Ability to work with Project Teams, Clients and key stakeholders on managing environmental and social risks and impacts

 

Desired Qualifications, Skills, Experience and Competencies:

  1. Advanced degree (Masters or PhD) in environmental or social science, planning or related discipline
  2. Minimum 5-8 years of relevant experience
  3. Effective ability to participate in project development, design, conduct of feasibility studies and consultations with stakeholders; and demonstrated experience in monitoring Environmental & Social aspects during implementation.
  4. Proven ability to work with public and/or private sector clients and development organisations in an effective and professional manner in both formal and informal settings.
  5. Experience with the development and implementation of environmental strategies, policies, and procedures.
  6. Experience in working with civil society organizations and nongovernmental organizations.
  7. Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
  8. Good working knowledge of Hindi and other Indian language(s) would be an advantage.
  9. Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work in multi-disciplinary teams.
