Afforestation initiative in Madhya Pradesh

The Forest- PLUS Program, Government of Madhya Pradesh and Mahindra Sanyo Special Steel Pvt. Ltd. (MSSSPL) collaborated in a unique multi-dimensional public-private partnership under which 38,000 bamboo rhizomes and 4,000 saplings of Teak and Sheesham were planted in two districts in Madhya Pradesh landscape namely Harda and Hoshangabad. These saplings were planted across forest land, community land and private agricultural land in the two districts.

Two different models for afforestation, one in which private farmers undertook the plantation on their lands and the other in which government provided community land, were implemented. The afforestation initiative in Harda under the ‘Nadi Bachao Samridhi Lao Abhiyan’ program supported by the government and communities, featured 36,000 bamboo rhizomes planted on forest and private agricultural land. In Hoshangabad, 2,000 bamboo rhizomes and 4,000 saplings of teak and sheesham were planted on 4 hectares of community land in village Randhal. To commence the plantation, a community event was organized on July 3rd, 2016 in Randhal. Attendees included CEO, Zila Panchayat, Hoshangabad, Mr. Abhijeet Aggarwal, Col. Rajib Basu, Administration Head of MSSSPL, Forest-PLUS team, and various government officials and communities. The district administration under the MGNREGA framework allocated 15 lakhs rupees to this initiative for technical support, irrigation facilities, pit digging, manure, pesticides and other requirements to maintain the plantation.

The unique feature of this afforestation initiative is that several public sector departments including district and block level administration and MGNREGA extended formal support along with the letter of commitment for land availability as well as post-plantation maintenance and oversight. In addition to carbon sequestration, this afforestation initiative also links to livelihood enhancement for communities as bamboo, teak and sheesham are all commercial species. MSSSPL, a Corporate Forest Responsibility (CFR) signatory developed a nursery dedicated to this afforestation commitment in May 2015. The training provided by Forest-PLUS to MSSSPL for developing and maintaining this nursery has prepared MSSSPL to continue to contribute to ongoing afforestation projects as a result of this partnership.
