The role involves providing geo-spatial support to the Forestry and Biodiversity program at IORA. Responsibilities:

Responsibilities include but are not limited to

  1. Image processing
  2. Collection of ground-truth data
  3. Geo-statistical analysis,
  4. Spatial data generation and mining
  5. Generation of cartographic outputs as per the project requirements.

Technical Skills Required:

  1. Data digitization and handling of spatial data
  2. Cartography skills
  3. Hands-on experience in ArcGIS, QGIS, ERDAS Imagine or other open-source or proprietary software
  4. Basic programming knowledge for handling automation is a plus

  2. Carry out forest biomass, biodiversity, and ecological assessments

Responsibilities:

  1. Identification of new opportunities:
    1. New RFPs/RFQs/EOIs/Request for Empanelment
    2. Collaborate with the technical experts at IORA in developing new concept notes and pitch presentation for potential donors
    3. Creating and updating a roster of potential donors and their focus areas which are relevant to IORA’s work
  2. Proposal Development and Submission:
    1. Supporting in preparation of concept notes, presentations and EOIs
    2. Preparation of Description sheets for shortlisted calls in IORA’s prescribed format
    3. Identification of resource need for a proposal – staffing, budget and timeline
    4. Analysing the RFPs thoroughly and listing out all required mandatory documentations and conditions to support the respective technical team in ensuring proper & timely submission as per the client’s requirements

Desired Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  1. Master’s degree in Climate Science, Climate Policy, Environmental Management, Natural Resource Management or related disciplines from a reputed university or Ph.D in any of the above mentioned disciplines, with focus on climate change.
  2. 5-7 years of experience after Master’s degree or 1-2 years of experience after Ph.D degree in climate change adaptation, climate change mitigation and climate finance. Cross sectoral experience in climate change will be preferred. Lesser experience may be considered in exceptional cases.
  3. Knowledge of recent developments in national and international climate policy, climate change modelling, GHG inventory preparation, statistical analysis, socio-economic analysis, low carbon development planning, climate adaptation planning and climate finance.
  4. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

The role involves utilizing conventional and advanced neural network methods to analyse Tree-cover outside Forest (ToF) in specific regions of India. This is a NASA funded collaborative project involving Michigan State University, Forest Survey of India, and IORA Ecological Solutions. The job will involve occasional field work and stakeholder engagements.

  1. Coordinate joint activities pertaining to TOF analysis with MSU, FSI and IORA Ecological Solutions.
  2. Explore and utilize conventional methods along with advanced neural networks to classify TOF for the chosen study area.
  3. Coordinate and lead fieldwork activities during the project duration – validation of the TOF data products including both field as well as lab based, using various proxy datasets that includes Google Earth Images and other high-resolution datasets.
  4. Work with project teams to assess and organize complex data assets from a variety of sources for spatial modelling, especially coordination with FSI to acquire Indian satellite remote sensing data.

Desired Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

Responsibilities:

Applicants should demonstrate innovative work in their field as evidenced by high-quality publications, and a track record for innovations. Candidates must also be able to collaborate effectively with other researchers.

  1. The research fellow will have to apply distributed machine learning approaches that can be applied for forest species level mapping.
  2. Develop and use software libraries to process large data sets that are publicly and privately available.
  3. Research and implement machine and reinforcement learning models that connect fundamental engineering properties to efficient designs.
  4. Develop new tools for innovative network and compute solutions that leverage deep learning as part of their design.
  5. Apply Deep learning techniques to various forestry and agriculture applications.
  6. Publish research findings in conferences and journals.

Desired Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  1. A recent Ph.D. graduate in Computer Science, Geoinformatics or related disciplines.
  2. Experience in leading & participating in research projects utilising deep learning algorithms.
  3. Candidate must have strong analytical and technical skills with problem-solving capability.
  4. Solid knowledge of statistical methods for temporal and spatial analysis of scientific data.
  5. Experience in both theoretical works and applied works in image analysis is required.
  6. A strong documented background in programming is essential, for example using Matlab, Python, C, etc., and parallel computing knowledge is beneficial.
  7. Experience, both in deep learning and in digital image processing.
  8. Experience from top international groups is a plus.
  9. Writing technical reports, presentations and conduct outreach activities.

The primary responsibility of these interns would be to help in

  1. Literature Review, to gather relevant papers for the ROAM team to further process.
  2. Drafting the Case studies to highlight the best practices in FLR.
  3. Gather relevant information to compute cost benefit for the FLR interventions and,
  4. To help with setting up calls with the experts for their comments and validation of drivers and interventions.

Candidate should have atleast 3-month experience interning with a Research Agency / NGO and with a relevant experience working on Restoration projects.

Qualifications:

MSc. in Environment/ Climate Change/Forestry/ Natural Resource Management or any other relevant field.
